burr oak (quercus macrocarpa) - a large, dense deciduous tree reaching up to 100ft tall. native to central & eastern turtle island (north america) . known for its large size, lobed leaves, and distinctly fringe capped acorns. tolerates most soils. hardy. can tolerate wind and drought, as well as sun or shade. seed is considered to be the most palatable of all the oaks. sweet seeds with little tannin. wood was prized for its hardiness & resilience.
