medlar (mespilua germanica) - a unique, deciduous tree growing up to 20’tall. cultivated since roman times. prefers full sun to part shade and can tolerate high winds. self-pollinated. fruit resembles a cross between apples and rosehips and is enjoyed after being “bletted”, a process where it’s left to basically be softened by frost or storage. used for sauce, jams, “medlar cheese”, as well as spirits. used since medieval times for food & medicine. said to taste similar to apple but with rich undertones of apricot & citrus. hardiness zone 5-9.
