osage orange (maclura pomifera) - a large, thorny shrub native to south central turtle island (north america). used in hedgerows and windbreaks. valued for its wood, which is extremely rot resistant & very durable. produces an intriguing inedible fruit. tolerant of drought, clay soils & will grow in part shade. hardiness zone 4-9
