witch hazel (hamamelis virginiana) - a small, deciduous shrub growing up to 16 feet tall. native to eastern turtle island (north america). a unique plant in that it flowers in late autumn, rather than spring. the bark has been used medicinally for a long time for its astringent & medicinal properties.
