(juglans nigra) – native to eastern north america, traditionally used as a food and dye plant, as well as for lumber. produces a dark brown-black dye. compound leaves, nut has a robust, refined and richer walnut flavor. can be tapped for sap like a maple. allelopathic (produces chemicals that stunts or kills plants nearby). the hulls have a bright, strong citrus scent.

black walnut is a fast growing deciduous tree, growing up to 98’ with up to a 65’ spread. suitable for all soils but prefers well-draining soil. prefers full sun. hardiness zone 4-9
