eastern redbud (cercis canadensis) - a small, showy tree growing up to 30’tall. native to eastern & central northern turtle island (north america). can grow in woodland areas (part shade) or full sun. early pink spring blooms with later arriving beautiful heart shaped leaves. flowers edible & high in vitamin C. had some traditional medicinal uses as well. the bark of young shoots is used in basketry. has long slender pods like other fabacaea family nitrogen fixers. hardiness zone 4-9
